Happy Earth Day everyone! Today is the perfect day to take simple steps in protecting our planet!

ree

In 1969, a massive oil blowout off the coast of Santa Barbara spilled an estimated 3 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean, killing thousands of marine life. The spill was a rude awakening, sparking conversations and federal policies for environmental reform to protect the planet. Shortly after the incident, the first Earth Day celebration was held in 1970 and is now celebrated yearly. It serves as a conscious reminder of how fragile our planet is and the importance of a communal effort to protect our home.

On this day, Family Promise of Orange County is promoting clean living and a healthy, sustainable habitat for people and wildlife alike. Earth is our home and we work diligently to ensure all families feel safe and sheltered on our planet.

This week is also National Volunteer Week and a perfect time to honor all the environmental volunteers who have been superheroes in protecting our planet!

We also can’t help but take this opportunity to share how amazing we think Family Promise volunteers are!

We are so appreciative of the hard work and dedication of all of our volunteers, and we are especially appreciative of their overwhelming support this past year as we navigated the challenges of the pandemic.

Volunteers for Family Promise of Orange County play a vital role in helping our families attain stable housing, on Earth Day and EVERY DAY!

King of Glory Lutheran Church has been involved with Family Promise of Orange County since the program’s inception. They were first approached in 2011 to become a founding congregation in our Emergency Shelter Program, and by 2012, they began hosting families as part of our congregational rotation.

King of Glory continues to partner with FPOC as a host congregation, with Paul Wallace serving as the ministry coordinator. He is supported by a team of wonderful volunteers who serve as overnight hosts, provide meals, and support our families. Our current Board President, Bernd Steinebrunner, is also a congregant of King of Glory.

We are so blessed to have the support of such a wonderful congregation for all these years! To learn more about King of Glory, visit their website here!
